In 2020, the Wallenberg Foundations jointly contributed with nearly SEK 229 million to research at Karolinska Institutet. Established in 1917, it is especially the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) – Swden's largest private funder of research – that over the years has funded major investments in infrastructure and grants to individual researchers and projects at KI. Wallenberg was Minister for Foreign Affairs 1914–1917, and member of the Riksdag's Första kammaren (the Upper house) 1907–1919. Together with his wife, he created Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, which is one of the main contributors to the private university Stockholm School of Economics. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has for decades played an important role for funding of cutting-edge equipment, including a large enabling grant when the Lund Nano Lab was built.
